All this in Israel, where just last month divers accidentally found a large treasure of 2,000 gold coins from the 11th century on the seabed.

The objects were found in a small crevice of a stalactite cave in the Galilee region. They are the first artefacts of this kind to come to light in the area and are testimonies of unique importance for the distant past of this place.

Among the finds of the cave stand out two silver coins minted in the time of Alexander and various pieces of silver jewelry, such as rings, bracelets and earrings.

On one side of the coins Hercules is depicted with the features of Alexander and on the other Zeus sitting on his throne. The coins helped archaeologists date the finds.

In a statement broadcast by the American television network CNN, the competent Israel Antiquities Authority assessed that the objects were hidden in the cave by residents who hurriedly left the area during a disturbance that occurred probably after the death of Alexander.
