The first set of Croatian euro bank coins is dedicated to the city located on the Adriatic coast in the southern part of the Croatian region of Dalmatia – Dubrovnik. The city is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, with almost 1.5 million visitors every year. After joining the European Union in 2013, Croatia considered adopting the euro. Finally, on 1 June 2022, the European Commission approved Croatia’s entry into the eurozone, which was confirmed on 24 June 2022 at the EU summit in Brussels.
The new currency came into effect on January 1, 2023. The ratio between the euro and the Croatian kuna is 7.5345 kuna per 1 euro.
The €2 coin depicts a map of Croatia and words about freedom from the famous work of Ivan Gundulić Dubravka. The €1 coin depicts a ferret against a chessboard background. Nikola Tesla is depicted on the 50, 20 and 10 cent coins. Coins of 5, 2 and 1 cents feature the image of the Glagolitic alphabet.
