The Battle of Crete (May 20 – June 1, 1941) is one of the most gripping episodes of World War II. After occupying mainland Greece, the Germans conducted an unprecedented airborne operation in Crete, aiming to capture the island’s airports with paratroopers and then landing troops. The island was defended by the civilian population of Crete, remnants of the Greek Army, minus the Cretan Division that was stranded on the mainland, as well as British, Australian and New Zealand allies. . After heavy losses on the first day of the Battle, the Germans on the second day captured Maleme Airport and eventually prevailed over the entire island. The heroic resistance of the Cretan people caused worldwide admiration, but also fierce German retaliation. Most were in poor condition and heavily used, to the point where their relief and country of origin could hardly be discerned.
