The a side depicts the wild bear Mato who according to the legend of the Sioux hunted 2 brothers by carving grooves in the rock that “leaped” to protect them. Eventually, Mato retreated, leaving the two boys alone and scared at the top of the mountain. The story ends as the two boys are transported back to their village on the wings of Wanblee, a giant eagle. These rocks are sacred in Native American culture and are called Bear Lodge.
Today, visiting Devils Tower offers a journey full of Native American cultural discoveries. The area is still an active, sacred site and is considered a place of spiritual significance and cultural history by over two dozen Native American tribes!
