This collectible coin, issued to commemorate ‘2,500 Years Since the Battle of Thermopylae’, is a unique piece for any collection. In 480 BC, the Greeks, led by the Spartan King Leonidas, resisted the advance of the much stronger Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae. Leonidas’s heroic ‘Come and take them’ and the self-sacrifice of the Greeks remain an eternal legacy for every nation fighting for its freedom.
The coin features an ancient Greek helmet, similar to that worn by Leonidas. Around the perimeter, the words ‘2,500 years since the Battle of Thermopylae’ and ‘Hellenic Republic’ are inscribed. The theme is surrounded by a decorative meander pattern. To the left of the helmet, the anthemion (the mint mark of the IETA) and the year 2020 are depicted. The design is signed by G. Stamatopoulos.
This rare and unique collectible coin is a commemorative piece of Greece’s history, depicting the bravery and self-sacrifice of the ancient Greeks. It is an essential item for any collection of collectible coins and a wonderful gift for every history enthusiast.
