Description

Archimedes’ Cochlear is an ingenious invention that was used to pump and transport water from a low point to a higher one. Archimedes is said to have invented it during his stay in Egypt, apparently having in mind the need to transport water from the Nile to irrigate crops.

It consists of a helical shaft inside a cylindrical tube. The auger is sloped with the ground and, as it is manually or mechanically rotated, the water is trapped and carried up to the top of the structure, from where it pours out and feeds irrigation ditches. The invention is described by the Roman architect Vitruvius, while according to Diodorus Siculus it was also used to pump water from mines. The simplicity and wisdom of the mechanism made it popular over time, as a result of which it is still used today in similar applications.
