SHIMON PERES – COMMEMORATIVE COIN 2023/5776 “Israel Nobel Prize Laureates”. Shimon Peres, one of the founders of the State of Israel and one of its greatest leaders, dedicated his life to the service of Israel. His last role was as President of the State of Israel. For more than 60 years, Peres worked energetically, promoting security and public projects that had a profound impact on the development of the state, including equipping and building up the Israel Defense Force. , as well as the establishment of the Nuclear Reactor Plant in Dimona and Nuclear Research Facilities in Sorek, both in southern Israel. He developed Israel’s defense industries and was at the forefront of making Israel a technological powerhouse and world leader in innovation.
His immense work for the benefit of the State of Israel spans all chapters of his life. Over the years, he worked tirelessly and held many high-ranking government ministerial positions – Minister of Defence, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Finance, Minister of Interior, Minister of Absorption, Minister of Transport and Communications, Minister of Information, Minister of Development of the Negev and Galilee, Leader of the Opposition, Prime Minister and, finally, President of the State of Israel.
Simon Peres was a politician and public figure with a special character. For his extensive work he won honor and international recognition. The Pope awarded him a Peace Medal and honorary citizenship, and Queen Elizabeth awarded him an honorary knighthood. United States President Barack Obama awarded him an American Presidential Medal of Freedom, an honor reserved for very few people, making Peres the first and only Israeli politician to receive the medal. In 1994, Peres was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts on the international stage for the State of Israel in promoting peace, after joining with then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to achieve the Oslo Accords.
