The San Marino Department of Philately and Numismatics has released a new one-ounce silver coin as Europe’s smallest republic seeks to enter the investment coin market. As the third smallest country in Europe after the Vatican and Monaco, the fifth smallest country in the world has developed an impressive catalog of collectible coins since the first national currency was produced and circulated in 1864.
As part of an agreement between Italy and San Marino, coins were produced in denominations and specifications as Italian coins and denominated in lire. With Italy’s entry into the eurozone in 2002, coins of San Marino were also expressed in euros, although the country is not a member state of the eurozone. The choice to dedicate the first coin of this new annual series to the peregrine lies in the elegance of these birds of prey that nest in niches in the rocks near the First Tower of San Marino atop Mount Titano.
The silver coins are produced by the Austrian mint at its facilities in Vienna on behalf of the state – Banca Centrale della Repubblica di San Marino. The reverse of the coin was created by artist Anna Schlindner, who has depicted a peregrine falcon in flight. The inscription PEREGRINE FALCON appears along with the additional text SAN MARINO and the year 2024 is placed along the top
The specifications and denomination of the 1 OZ · Ag 999 · 5 EURO coins are shown below. The back side depicts the image of the official coat of arms of the Republic of San Marino, designed by Antonella Napolione. The top, which depicts three towers with wings on a mountain within a crowned shield, is believed to have been used for the first time in the 14th century and appears on the national flag. The text REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO circles the top.
