In 480 BC, the Greeks, led by the Spartan king Leonidas, faced the much stronger Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae. Leonidas’s heroic ‘Come and take them’ and the self-sacrifice of the Greeks remain an eternal legacy for every nation fighting for its freedom.
The coin depicts an ancient Greek helmet, similar to that of Leonidas. Around the perimeter, the words “2500 years from the Battle of Thermopylae” and “Hellenic Republic” are inscribed. The theme is surrounded by a decorative meander pattern. To the left of the helmet, the anthemion (the symbol of the Bank of Greece) and the year 2020 are displayed. The design is signed by the renowned designer G. Stamatopoulos.
