The ‘100 Years from the Incorporation of Thrace’ commemorative coin is a unique piece for any collection. This rare coin, issued by the Bank of Greece, celebrates the incorporation of Western Thrace into Greece in 1920, following World War I and the Treaty of Neuilly.
The coin’s design, curated by Georgios Stamatopoulos, is inspired by the currency of the ancient Thracian city of Abdera, depicting a griffin, a mythological bird-like creature. Around the edge, the words ‘100 years from the incorporation of Thrace’ and ‘Hellenic Republic 2020’ are inscribed.
The griffin was the emblem of the ancient city of Abdera, which, according to mythology, was founded by Hercules. In 545 BC, the inhabitants of the Ionian city of Teos settled in Abdera, minting coins that bore the head of Apollo on the obverse and the mythical griffin on the reverse.
This collectible coin is a commemorative piece of Greece and Thrace’s history, depicting the rich heritage and ancient mythology of the region. It is ideal for coin collectors, historians, and those interested in Greek culture and history.
