Doménikos Theotokópoulos, born in 1541 in Crete, was originally trained as an icon painter. He traveled to Venice, where he was influenced by the greatest masters of Italian art, such as Titian and Tintoretto. In 1577, he settled permanently in Toledo, Spain, where he became known as ‘El Greco’, meaning ‘The Greek’. He is considered one of the most important painters, sculptors, and architects of the Spanish Renaissance and a precursor of modern art.
