Collectible commemorative 2 euro coin honoring the 100th anniversary of the historic union of Crete with Greece, a significant event in Greek history. It is in a brilliant uncirculated (BU) condition and was issued by the Bank of Greece in 2013.
The inner part of the coin features an illustration of Cretan rebels raising the Greek flag, symbolizing Crete’s struggle for union with Greece. Crete was incorporated into Greece on December 1, 1913, during the reign of King Constantine and the premiership of Eleftherios Venizelos.
Crete, which was under Venetian rule for 465 years (1204-1669), became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1669. In 1898, Crete gained autonomy from the Sultan and the Cretan State (1898-1913) was established, under the protection of the great powers and the sovereignty of the Sultan.
The ‘Theriso Revolution’ in 1905, organized by Venizelos, had as its main demand the union with Greece, which was finally achieved in 1913.
This unique coin is a rare piece for any collection of collectible coins, offering a vivid representation of the history of Greece and Crete.
