A collectible commemorative 2 euro coin issued by the Bank of Greece in 2013 to celebrate the 2400th anniversary of Plato’s Academy. Its quality is brilliant uncirculated (BU), making it a rare and valuable piece.
On the inner part of the coin, we admire the portrait of Plato, the founder of the Academy. Plato’s Academy, established in 387 BC in Athens, was named after the location in the gardens of Akademos. There, Aristotle studied for 20 years before founding his own school.
The Academy continued to operate as a philosophical school throughout the Hellenistic period until the death of Philo of Larissa in 83 BC. Plato’s philosophy continued to be taught in Athens until the revival of the Academy in 410 AD as a center of Neoplatonism. Finally, the Academy was definitively closed in 529 AD by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian.
This collectible coin is a wonderful representation of the history and philosophy of Greece, making it an essential piece for any coin collector.
