Penelope Delta was a pioneer of children’s literature in Greece and perhaps the most important female figure in a critical period for Hellenism, with rich philanthropic activity. She was born in Alexandria, Egypt and was the daughter of Emmanuel Benakis, later mayor of Athens and national benefactor, and wife of the Phanariot merchant Stefanos Delta. She developed a close friendship with Eleftherios Venizelos, while her great but unfulfilled love for Iona Dragoumis is also known. With the encouragement of Kostis Palamas, Penelope Delta wrote historical novels for children, on the occasion of current national issues The time of the Bulgarian killer, For the homeland, In the swamp secrets, as well as other books, such as The Tale without a name, Trelantonis, Magas, The Life of Christ, etc. Her goal, as she said, was to awaken “beautiful and great ideals in Greek children” and to instill in them values such as patriotism, friendship and love. Her books nurtured generations of Greeks and remain popular. Penelope Delta ended her life when the Germans entered Athens in 1941.
