The central motif of the coin depicts one of the symbols of the Ukrainian nation – the sunflower, which has a strong presence in Ukrainian folklore and culture, appearing in cuisine, legends, literature, and painting for many years. Additionally, for many Ukrainians, sunflowers are a symbol of the homeland, as against the blue sky they resemble the colors of the national flag.
