Its call can be heard from almost every porch or barn in the country. If it finds a suitable opening, such as under the ridge of a roof or a broken window, it will build its cup-shaped nest. It will even nest inside houses. The choice of the barn swallow as the national bird was primarily the result of a campaign conducted by ornithologists in the early sixties.
