The barn swallow, Estonia’s national bird, is a quintessential guest in Estonian homes. Its call can be heard from almost any awning or barn beam across the country. If the bird finds a suitable opening, beneath a roof ridge or through a broken window, it will build its cup-shaped nest. It will even nest inside a house. The selection of the barn swallow as the national bird was primarily the result of a campaign conducted by ornithologists in the early sixties.
