Special Edition 2 Euro, Birth of Prince Charles, Luxembourg 2020
24,90 €
2 Euro coin commemorating the birth of Prince Charles of Luxembourg in 2020. The heir couple of the Grand Duchy announced the arrival of their son on Sunday, May 10, 2020, at 5:13 a.m. at the Grande-Duchesse Charlotte Hospital in Luxembourg. The newborn’s full name is Charles Jean Philippe Joseph Marie Guillaume, weighing 3.190 kilograms and measuring 50 centimeters in length. This coin release is also the first time the Central Bank of Luxembourg (CBL) has issued a coin without the portrait of the Grand Duke, a practice mandated by the constitution of the Grand Duchy. Instead, the Grand Duke’s monogram is placed in the top left corner to avoid overwhelming the design dedicated to the infant, who by nature is small, thus maintaining a reference to the Grand Duke.

This 2 Euro coin celebrates the birth of Prince Charles of Luxembourg in 2020. The royal heir couple announced their son’s birth on Sunday, May 10, 2020, at 5:13 a.m. at the Grande-Duchesse Charlotte Hospital. Named Charles Jean Philippe Joseph Marie Guillaume, the baby prince weighed 3.190 kilograms and was 50 centimeters tall. Marking a first in Luxembourg’s numismatic history, the Central Bank of Luxembourg (CBL) has issued a coin without the Grand Duke’s portrait, adhering to the constitutional practices of the Grand Duchy. The Grand Duke’s portrait has been replaced by his monogram in the upper left corner to ensure the coin’s design, dedicated to a newborn, remains uncluttered. The monogram serves as a subtle homage to the Grand Duke.
