This collectible coin, issued to honor the ‘100 Years since the Incorporation of Thrace’, is a unique piece for any collection. Thrace, after World War I and the Treaty of Neuilly in 1919, was ceded to Greece. In 1920, the Greek army triumphantly entered the region, which has since been an integral part of the national body.

The coin’s design is inspired by the currency of the ancient Thracian city of Abdera, depicting a griffin, a bird-like mythical creature. Around the edge, the words ‘100 years since the incorporation of Thrace’ and ‘Hellenic Republic 2020′ are inscribed. The coin’s design was curated by the renowned designer G. Stamatopoulos.

The griffin was the emblem of the ancient city of Abdera, which, according to mythology, was founded by Hercules. The city was established to honor the memory of Hercules’ companion, Abderus, who was torn apart by the horses of Diomedes. In 545 BC, the inhabitants of the Ionian city of Teos settled in Abdera, avoiding Persian subjugation. In their new homeland, the Teans minted coins that bore the head of Apollo on the obverse and the mythical griffin on the reverse.

This rare and unique collectible coin is a commemorative piece of the history of Greece and Thrace, as well as the ancient city of Abdera.
