Amerigo Vespucci: The Man Who Gave His Name to America
Amerigo Vespucci (March 9, 1454 – February 22, 1512) was an Italian explorer, economist, navigator, and cartographer who proved that Brazil and the West Indies were not the eastern coast of Asia, as initially believed by the voyages of Christopher Columbus. Instead, he recognized that they were a new, unexplored continent, previously unknown to Afro-Eurasians. His discovery was so decisive that the new continent was named after him: America.
