2 Euro, Colored, Slovakia, Cyril and Methodius, 2013
18,00 €
Commemorative colored 2 euro coin for the 1150th anniversary of the arrival of the missionaries Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia. Great Moravia was the first Slavic state in Central Europe, lasting nearly 70 years. Most scholars agree that its territory spanned both sides of the Morava River, covering present-day Western Slovakia, Moravia, and Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). Saints Cyril and Methodius were also known as ‘the Apostles of the Slavs’. The coin’s inner part features the Thessaloniki missionaries alongside the symbolic double cross erected on three hills. Constantine holds a book representing education and faith, while Methodius is depicted with a church symbolizing faith and institutional Christianity.
