The coin is issued on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the radio broadcast appeal (‘Appel du 18 juin’) made by Charles de Gaulle – as the leader of the Free French Forces – from the BBC in London on June 18, 1940, following France’s surrender. Addressing the French people, de Gaulle declared that the war was not over. This speech is considered to have marked the birth of the French Resistance and the beginning of the struggle against German occupation during World War II. The perimeter of the coin features the 12 stars of the European Union.
