Commemorating 500 years since the first circumnavigation of the Earth, led and organized by the Portuguese explorer and navigator Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão De Magalhães). The Spanish expedition to the East Indies began in 1519 and concluded in 1522, achieving the first circumnavigation of the Earth. The design features a portrait of Ferdinand Magellan. On the right side, the phrase ‘CIRCUM NAVEGAÇÃO’ (circumnavigation) is inscribed in a semicircle, and below it, the inscription ‘1519 FERNÃO DE MAGALHÃES’. On the left side, the year of issue ‘2019’ and the country of issue ‘PORTUGAL’ are inscribed in a semicircular arrangement. The coin’s outer ring displays the 12 stars of the European flag.
