2 Euro, Colored, 25th Anniversary of the European Monetary Institute (EMI), Belgium, 2019
39,00 €
Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the European Monetary Institute (EMI), this coin features a portrait of Alexandre Lamfalussy, the first President of the EMI, on the right side with his name inscribed below. On the left center, the acronym ‘EMI’ is displayed, with the year ‘1994’ above, marking the foundation year and Lamfalussy’s presidency. Below ‘EMI’, various coins are depicted cascading over one another, marked with ‘€’, ‘ECU’, and ‘BEF’ from top to bottom. The ‘BEF’ indicates Belgium’s former national currency, chosen for this Belgian issue to symbolize the transition from national currencies to a single European currency, the euro. The primary goal of the EMI was to establish the European System of Central Banks, including the European Central Bank (ECB) and the new currency. The inscription ‘European Monetary Institute’ appears at the top left side of the coin. Since the Royal Dutch Mint will produce the coins, the Utrecht Mint’s mark, the Mercury staff, the mark of the director of the Belgian mint, and the coat of arms of the municipality of Herzele are displayed on the left. The issuing country’s code ‘BE’ and the year of issue ‘2019’ are shown at the bottom. The initials ‘LL’ of the coin’s designer, Mr. Luc Luycx, are inscribed on the right. The perimeter of the coin features the 12 stars of the European Union.
