Description

The design for the 10 euro coin dedicated to Santore di Santarosa features the image of Santarosa himself, with his characteristics as a soldier and philhellene. His figure is strikingly recognizable and the design captures the importance of his action in the Greek Revolution of 1821. On the reverse, the flags of Greece and Italy appear in color.

Count Santorre di Santarosa (1783-1825) was a military and political figure from Piedmont, Italy, with rich patriotic activity and participation in many battles against Napoleon. An ardent supporter of the unification of Italy, but also inspired by democratic-liberal ideas that brought him into conflict with authoritarian regimes, he was associated with the Carbonari and in 1821 he led a revolutionary movement in Piedmont, with the main demand being the granting of a constitution. After the failure of the movement, he was arrested and escaped, ending up in Great Britain, where he came into contact with the Philhellenic Committee of London.
